AI used to be a “nice-to-have innovation topic.”
Now it’s showing up in security questionnaires, board meetings, audits, and contracts.

And here’s the uncomfortable truth:
Most organizations are already using AI… without fully governing it.

That gap is exactly why ISO/IEC 42001 is suddenly everywhere.


The Real Problem (No One Wants to Admit)

Let’s be honest about what’s happening inside companies right now:

  • Teams are using ChatGPT, copilots, and AI tools daily
  • Vendors are embedding AI into products without clear disclosures

3. “Who is responsible?”

AI breaks traditional ownership models.

Is it:

  • Engineering?
  • Security?
  • Legal?
  • Product?

ISO 42001 forces clear accountability:

  • AI governance roles
  • Approval workflows
  • Oversight responsibilities

No more “everyone owns it” → which really means no one does.


4. “Are your vendors introducing risk?”

Most companies don’t build AI.
They buy it, integrate it, or depend on it.

That means:

5. “Can you prove any of this?”

This is the GRC part.

It’s not enough to say:

“We use AI responsibly.”

You need:

In other words: audit-ready AI governance.

2. Customers are asking better questions

Security questionnaires are evolving.

Before:

  • Encryption?
  • MFA?
  • Data storage?

Now:

  • AI usage?
  • Training data sources?
  • Bias mitigation?
  • Explainability?
  • Human oversight?

This is already happening in real vendor assessments.


What This Means for You (Especially in GRC)

If you’re in GRC, your role is quietly expanding.

You’re no longer just covering:

  • Security controls
  • Compliance frameworks
  • Risk registers

You’re now expected to:

  • Translate AI risks into controls
  • Review AI vendor practices
  • Answer AI-specific questionnaire sections
  • Identify gaps in AI governance
  • Build reusable AI responses (your KL 2.0 will need this)

This is not optional.
It’s already part of the job.


The Brutal Reality

Most organizations today:

  • Don’t have an AI policy that goes deep enough
  • Don’t track AI usage centrally
  • Don’t assess AI-specific risks properly
  • Don’t monitor AI outputs continuously
  • Don’t have clear answers for questionnaires

And yet…
They are using AI every day.


The Opportunity (If You Move Early)

This is where it gets interesting for you personally.

If you understand ISO 42001 early, you can:

  • Lead AI governance discussions
  • Build AI sections in knowledge libraries
  • Standardize questionnaire responses
  • Identify gaps faster than others
  • Position yourself as the “AI + GRC” person

That combination is still rare.


Final Thought

AI is moving fast. Governance is trying to catch up.

ISO 42001 is not just another standard to memorize.
It’s a signal that GRC is evolving.

The question is no longer:

“Do you use AI?”

It is now:

“Can you prove that your AI is controlled, understood, and trustworthy?”

And very soon,
every company will need a real answer.
